'ENIMIES'

The word enemy by an authorized dictionary means a person who hates another or anything injurious or harmful. In light of these words the enemies in ‘Shooting an Elephant’ are apparently Britishers and the Burmese of one another and the Elephant.

Burmese hated Britishers because they had invaded sub continent and were ruling the area in an unjustified way. They had not only captured their land but also had treated the locals in brutal way.

Britishers on the other hand, had the power and were ruling at that time. They enjoyed their authority and abused it. They hated the local people for the sake of ruling.

George Orwell, who was the author and a police officer of the town ,was in the situation where he was confused whom to hate more because both of them were his enemies; the local people who despised him for doing a job he hated or to hate his officers and imperialism for doing injustice to
local people.

The tame Elephant turns out to be enemy of both;Burmese and George Orwell, who destroyed some body's bamboo hut and killed a black Dravidian coolie.

The difference of enmity differs from one race to another in this short story. Burmese had a valid reason for hating Britishers because they had dishonestly captured their land and were ruling them. On other hand Britishers were cold blooded and their enmity had no point.
Impulse to hate the Elephant was instant and obvious because it had caused harm and killed a person.
